Samyang | 8mm T3.1 VDSLR UMC Fisheye II Lens

Samyang 8mm T3.1 VDSLR UMC Fisheye II is the Cine video version of the Samyangs 8mm f/2.8 UMC Fisheye lens designed for high resolution interchangeable lens Compact System Cameras (CSC), such as Sony E-Mount NEX, Samsung NX, Fujifilm X, and Canon M mount digital cameras with APS-C or smaller sized sensors.

The Samyang 8mm T3.1 VDSLR cine lenses feature focus ring features toothed rings compatible with professional geared follow focus systems available in the film industry and likewise a toothed, decoupled (de-clicked) aperture ring. Such modifications allow for smooth and precise control over focus and aperture during video recording / filming. This allows for ultimate manual control of focus and exposure when filming from one scene to another with different light source intensities, such as changing exposure values (EVs) from inside to outside, or fade out / fade ins etc.

The Samyang cine versions are rated in T-Stops rather than F-stops which is usual for movie camera lenses. F-stop number expresses the speed of the lens on the assumption that lens transmits 100% of the incident light. The T-number expresses the actual light transmission, which is more accurate, and is the standard in professional cine lenses. The focus scale and aperture have been marked parallel to the lens's optical axis to aid in reading the lens when on video rigs.

The Samyang 8mm T3.1 VDSLR lens version is optically the same as the new Samyang 8mm f/2.8 UMC Fisheye II version. The optical construction is based on 11 lens elements arranged in 8 optical groups with 2 Aspherical, 3 ED elements. The aperture consists of six diaphragm blades with apertures available from f/2.8 to f/22. It has an Internal focusing (IF) system which means the lens does not change in size when focusing.

It features multilayer anti-reflection ultra multi-coating (UMC) to minimise flare and ghosting. The integrated (non-detachable) petal shaped lens hood also helps to reduce flare. The lens gives a diagonal field of vision of 180 degrees, and the minimum focusing distance is only 0.3 meters. Samyang 8mm T3.1 V-DSLR UMC Fish-eye II provides exceptional optical quality in a very compact body.

Fisheye lenses are also popular for special effects use where distortion, exaggerated perspective, or extreme depth of field are desired.
